The mission of the Deacon is defined in the constitution of the Presbyterian Church. "The office of the Deacon as set forth in scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ." It is the duty of Deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress.
The Deacons fulfill these requirements in many ways. Each Deacon is assigned at least one homebound person. Homebound persons are those who cannot partake of communion due to hospitalization, confined to a nursing facility, assisted care center or at home and/or lacking transportation or special needs.
Our goal is to visit each homebound person once a month. Each Deacon is also assigned a Prayer and Support Group consisting of approximately 17 families. We visit, call, or send notes to these families several times a year to establish a Christian relationship and share joys and concerns with the parishioners and the church. The Deacons serve God and the church in the following ways:
- Scheduling and assisting the pastor in homebound communion
- Plan, prepare, and serve funeral luncheons
- Placing roses on the baptismal font for births or deaths of members
- Plan and serve Easter breakfast
- Distribute Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies to the homebound
- Deacons furnish and wrap cookie plates for homebound, early in December, with distribution as arranged
- Copy and distribute sermon tapes and large bulletins to the homebound
- Providing rides to Sunday church services
- Support the choir in the family Christmas caroling and provide list of people that will be sung to
- Support the Parish Nurses
- Support the Prayer Shawl Ministry
- Support the Third Saturday Card Ministry
- "Journeying Through Grief" ministry booklets
- Work with Membership Committee to update the Prayer and Support Group rosters
- Work with other people and committees to glorify God
